Hugh Armstrong in his Providence days

Something for the weekend: live from Gdynia, Poland on Saturday October 17, the 2020 World Athletics Half Marathon Championships, (postponed from last March).

This is the only European or World Championship event scheduled to take place in 2020.

Look out for Joshua Cheptegei, Jacob Kiplimo in the men’s race, and Netsanet Gudeta in the women’s, among a host of the world’s top distance runners.

About 250 athletes from more than 50 teams are expected to take part in Saturday’s races, which follow a looped 5k circuit around Gdynia’s city centre before finishing on its main beach on the Baltic Sea coast.

Best of luck to Hugh Armstrong (Ballina AC) representing Ireland. He has a 64:29 pb from Charleville in 2019.

The other Irish competitors are Ann Marie McGlynn (Letterkenny AC) and Kevin Seaward ( St Malachy’s AC)
