Weekend roundup Athlone, Dublin, Charlestown – updated

Great running by members at a number of races over the weekend. They were in action in the Athlone 10 and Irish Runner 5k in Phoenix Park Dublin on Saturday, and the Colm Horkan Memorial Run in Charlestown and Fast Lane Half-marathon in Dublin on Sunday.

There was a National gold for Mary Browne, a great win for John Byrne in the Colm Horkan Half-marathon, where Colette Tuohy was second woman home,  Donna Gallagher won the Colm Horkan 10k women’s race with Dee Corcoran third, and category wins for Johnny Cribbin 10k, Paraic Sweeney Half and Caitlín Woods 5k.

All in all a successful weekend for over 20 members in the various events. In more detail:

Saturday May 18:

Well done to Martin Fitzmaurice who finished the Athlone 10 in 1:29.30.



Congratulations to Mary Browne, who won gold in the F65 category in 21:30 (21:29 chip) in the National 5k Championships held in conjunction with the Biofreeze Irish Runner 5k in the Phoenix Park, Dublin.
It was Mary’s first time running in our club vest.
Her achievement came less than a week after the fantastic success of being part of Ireland’s World record F65 4x800m relay team.
As reported previously Mary is National record holder for F65 5k – 20:58, Rathfarnham 5k 2023.

Also in the 5k, well done to Paula Donnellan Walsh who finished 8th in F40 category in 21:01 (21:00 chip)

5k championship results are yet to be confirmed by Athletics Ireland.

Race winners: Kieran Kelly 14:30, Amy Greene 16:41.


Sunday May 19:

Colm Horkan Memorial Run, Charlestown 

This was the fourth annual edition of the event, hosted by East Mayo AC together with Charlestown Sarsfields GAA.

Three races with separate start times- all finishing at the GAA football grounds in Lowpark.

10k 9:30am start

Winners: Men Eoin Gallagher Swinford AC 38:04

Women:  winner Donna Gallagher Mayo AC 42:01, 3rd Dee Corcoran 44:59, 6th and 1st F50 Ruth Carney 46:25

Mayo AC men:

6th Johnny Cribbin 1st M60 (bib 4526) 40:55, 8th Ray Clarke 41:20 4th M50 , Gerry Corley 53:13, George Bell 58:24

Half-marathon 09.00am start:

Winner John Byrne Mayo AC 1:19.00, 1:18.59 chip –  back on top of the podium – a great win. Congratulations!

John won the 10k in 2018 in 33:58

First woman Deirdre Martin Carrick-on-Shannon AC 1:30.29, 2nd Colette Tuohy 1:34.08

Paraic Sweeney injured his hamstring at the X-country International in Nov 2022. He says ” It was a grade 3 injury and it took a long time to rehab. I started training again with Matt Bidwell at the end of January and I got around the Colm Horkan Charlestown HM this morning.
It’s great to be back and running in the club colours again and with a good few club runners today.  The mighty John Byrne won it. Happy days!!”

Fast Lane Half-marathon and 10k in Dublin 9am start.

“The race is located along the Grand Canal at Clondalkin and around the perimeter of Grange Castle Business Park. It has that country feel on the edge of the city. It is a very flat course with long straight lines. The route has an elevation gain of 27m over each 10k loop.”

Well done to Neil Carroll Mayo AC who finished the Half-marathon in 1:30.28
