We win twelve medals at National Masters Indoors
Six masters from the club went to Athlone AIT today and spent a long but very rewarding day competing in the Indoors Championships. Between them they won a total of 12 National medals – five gold, four silver and three bronze. A great start to 2014 for the club. Competing in various events across a range of age categories – higher, faster, longer – peer rivalry is friendly but fierce, and a wonderful experience for those heading for the golden years. A combination of exciting competition and camaraderie between competitors made for a fantastic day of track and field action. Patrick Moran M55, led off early with bronze in both the high and long jumps and another splendid bronze in the 400 metres in 67.94. Pauline Moran W55, Colette Tuohy W45, and Margaret Glavey W60 were into action on the track (200 metres lap), mixing it with Olympian Pauline Curley W40 (Tullamore Harriers) who won the 3,000 in a new National category record time 10:25 . Colette was into her first day as a W45 – it was also her birthday – many Happy returns as it turned out. She won gold in 1500 (5:13) and 3000 metres (10:38) with some very smooth running. Pauline Moran renewed rivalry with Sheelagh Jones (DSD) and finished in silver behind her in 800 (2:51) and 1500, and a gold in 3000 when Sheelagh was unfortunate to be disqualified. Margaret Glavey was in a league of her own in both 800 (3:17) and 3000 metres, and she easily won gold in both. Martin Peyton M60 was 4th in the shot and also competed in the long jump but was out of the medals. Tom Hunt in M65 won silver in both the 3000 and 1500 metres.
Another Mayo master, Mary Roache W40, (Castlebar AC) had a great day winning gold in the long jump (3:79), bronze in 60 metres dash, and was 4th in the 200 metres. Top 3 results at www.athleticsireland.ie
