A unique victory for Norah Newcombe – first overall in the 6th Breaffy 10k

Sunday was a misty Autumn day at Breaffy for the annual 10k. There’s been excellent weather for running on each race day over the six years of this enjoyable event organised by the local GAA club. It was also the penultimate race in Mayo AC 2016 Vodafone C&C Cellular Club League. The one lap course has a gradual testing uphill section from 2-8k with a flat fast run in to the finish at the National School.
Norah Newcombe (Mayo AC) led from start to finish to record a unique overall victory in 37:39. It’s the second time this year that a woman has won a local race – Kathy Gleeson from Claremorris won  last June in the Irishtown 8k. Like many, Norah is currently beginning to taper her training ahead of the National Marathon in Dublin in three weeks time- she ran over twenty miles in a training run last Thursday. Ann Lennon ran another fine race coming home second overall in 38:31, with Angela O’Connor third in 41:05 – two inspirational runs by the W50s. Paul Reynolds was first man in 39:06, just two seconds ahead of Brendan Murphy who ran a PB dipping well under 40 minutes for the first time. Brendan has knocked three minutes off his 10k time in the last two years. Neil Carroll finished third in 39:40 ensuring Mayo AC had a clean sweep of the top three women’s and men’s prizes.

Mayo AC also took the o50 men’prizes through Michael Sweeney 42:15, and Monica Joyce who ran another PB 46:45 to add bonus points and boost her place in the Club League. Angela McVann currently tops the women’s Club League table and she also got bonus points with a 46:23 PB. Helen Hopkins ran this race last year and was also delighted with a new PB improving to 45:25. The League tables will be updated this week and the final race will be the 51st Annual Hollymount Road Races next month.

Kevin McGing, Chairman Breaffy GAA presented the prizes and thanked the organisers excellently led by Maggie Heneghan and supported by Breaffy GAA club, Castlebar Fit4Life, Mayo AC, Order of Malta, Gardai, and other helpers. It was a real community effort and they all celebrated afterwards with welcome refreshments in the school hall at the prize presentation.
