A number of members competed in Tuam today as the local AC hosted their annual 8k. It was a well organised event held in breezy conditions – thankfully the overnight rain had swept past by the afternoon race start time.
The course starts and finishes on the Dublin Road, and is over one lap, with five kilometres out on rural roads.
Many of the 226 finishers (well down on 2017) were putting down a marker for 2018. North Sligo AC dominated both the men’s and women’s races. Led by race winner Eamon McAndrew 26.53 they took five of the top six places. Eamon’s clubmate Heather Foley was the women’s winner in 30:46.
Well done to Brendan Hession who was Mayo AC’s first finisher – 14th in 30:22. And well done to others listed Neil Carroll 31:11, Tony O’Malley 31:52, Paul Reynolds 31:54, Paddy Walsh 32:07, James Malone 32:55, Ronnie Naylor 34:32, Lynda Hession 36:30, PJ Hall 37:45, Owen Mongan 38:04, Ann Marie Clarke 38:58, Elaine Hession 40:19, Bernie McHugh 40:20, Noelle Kilduff 43:37, Catherina Diskin Hunt 48:57.
Category placed were M45: Tony 2nd, Paul 3rd; M60: Ronnie 2nd PJ 3rd; W50: Bernie 3rd.
Our women’s team Lynda, Ann Marie, Elaine, Bernie were 2nd and men’s ream Brendan, Neil, Tony, Paul, finished 4th.

Our Sunday morning run was well attended again. Following the overnight heavy rain the outward route alongside the Castlebar river was flooded after the 3k point and leader Colette Tuohy diverted the group back to the start and added a 5k loop via Curradrish. This loop had a couple of challenging hills and made for a good morning’s work ending with some stride exercises in the park. Same time next Sunday – 8:20 for 8:30am start.
From Feb 1 we will be using Mayo AC 2018 registered members list for reports and postings.
