Training and results round up

The next few months offer a number of opportunities to compete in championship track events.

Just after Christmas the annual Indoor NorthWest Games take place at Athlone TUS on December 28.

It’s not a championship event, however it’s a good chance for anyone who has not been to this excellent facility to get some experience.

It’s ideally placed before the first championships of 2023, the Mayo Indoors at this venue on January 15. Then there’s Connacht Indoors, National Senior and National Masters Indoor competitions over the following weeks.

Members are reminded they have to be registered for 2023 to enter these events.

A 20 strong sprint training squad are being guided by coach Dermot McDermott. He sets them weekly schedules. This recent one will give you an idea of what’s involved.

Club cross-country training sessions are taking place on Saturday mornings at three different locations as posted here recently.

Organised by Colette Tuohy, Mike Griffin led a fantastic fartlek session at Mellett’s Hill on Saturday.

Their focus will be the National Intermediate and Masters Cross Country Championships at Gowran Kilkenny on February 12, a week after the National Masters Indoors.

In 2022 Mayo AC members won a brilliant 16 medals in these two national championships.

Although the recent National Marathon Championships results have not been confirmed it looks like we only have one medal winner- a Paraic Sweeney silver M70. Congratulations to Paraic on an excellent race.

It’s the fewest number of medals won by the club in the marathon in the past twenty years.
