Track matters
There was an exciting evening of athletics at the the Knocknarea Arena IT last week (June 2). Sligo City Sports was held there and provided a varied programme of events with opportunities for families, teams, and individuals to take part.
Two of Ireland’s top runners were there to headline the event. Mark English ran a 61 second 500 metres, and Ciara Mageean won the women’s 800 metres in 2:06.
Both of them will join the Irish team at the IAAF World Championships in London, August 4-13. Local athlete Colm Bourke jumped a 7:22 metre PB in the long jump. Dromore West native Emmet Dunleavy (Sligo AC) ran a fast 14:35 to win the 5,000 elite race. In another 5k our myrunresults man Graham Allen (Carrick AC) finished in 19:21, one second ahead of Martin O’Hagan (Swinford AC). Graham’s clubmate Adrian Lyons who ran 24:19 the previous night on the road in Ballinrobe, completed another 5k on track in 24:20. Adrian finished the week with a 50 minute 10k at Drumshanbo on Sunday last.
In between, we were treated to a 3:48 1500 metres win by Kevin Kelly. It was an enjoyable athletics meet organised by Dermott McDermott, enthusiastic coach and Believe and Achieve motivator.
