Three Mayo AC selected on Irish team for Masters International Cross Country

Norah Newcombe in Abbotstown – a great achievement to get on the start line.

The Irish Master Athletics Association have announced the Irish teams to compete in the British & Irish Masters Cross Country International next month.

This follows last Sunday’s trials –  part of the Open Autumn Cross Country Festival at the National Sports Campus in Abbotstown, Dublin. Teams of four represent each age category except for men’s o35 – o50 who have six in each.

Three Mayo AC members were selected. They are Pauline Moran in W60 team, Mags Glavey W65, and Tom Hunt M70. It was a big achievement for Norah Newcombe to get to the start line and she was just outside the selection contenders in 7th place W35.

There was tremendous support at Abbottstown – Dublin-based Belmullet native Jim Gaughan was there again and his voice rang in the ears of our competitors as they ran up the challenging sections. Also from Caitríona Moran who left Newport at 6am, did a strenuous session with her Dublin rowing club Neptune and was on the course at one o’clock to cheer Mayo AC.

Pauline Moran and Mags Glavey have worn the Irish vest with distinction and great success at this International event in recent years.

Tom Hunt will be competing for the fifth time (and in his fourth age category) having made his International debut as M55 in Belfast in 2007 in the company of the great Paddy Murray (Mayo AC) who was in the  M40 team.

Other West of Ireland team members for the Swansea event include Ian Egan (Tuam AC) in M50, Martin McEvilly (GCH) a wild card selection leading the M70 team, Michelle Lannon (Carrick on Shannon AC) W45, Martin Keane (Athenry AC) M70,  and five from Sligo clubs: Sara Doohan (Corran AC) W35, Mari Johnston W50, Kevin McGlone M50, Seamus Somers M45  – all Sligo AC, and Eamon McAndrew (North Sligo AC) M40. Evelyn McNelis (Naas AC) W70 is a native of Belmullet.
