The Mayo AC three conquer Slieve Aughty Warrior Challenge

The Slieve Aughty Warrior Challenge (July 15) originally had two races: a 10k – a “challenging course with some beautiful woodland sections and amazing views” and a 22k of “mixed terrain through woods and open mountain” .

Although at one point the event was going to be called off due to “unexpected flash flooding overnight” the 10k was deemed safe and the 22k was lost. (See some evidence of course flooding in photo).

Well done to three adventurous members who completed the 10k course – 49% uphill some with +13% gradient (there were two separate starts).

From one start Colin Clancy finished 4th in 48:27, ( winner Stoker Thornley 42:06). For our other two competitors it was their first trail race.

Mairéad Bristow came home in 58:30, with Gillian Hanrahan just behind in 60:09.

Both found it “tough in the conditions but really enjoyed it all the same”.
