Swinford 8K 2010 – Race Report

A large group of Mayo AC members made their way to the Swinford 8k road race on Sunday, August the 1st which was held as part of the local Siamsa Straide Festival. It was also race No. 4 in the 2010 C+C Cellular league.

Once again the event was supremely organised by the local Swinford AC and their many volunteers who assisted on the day.

In a race won by Gerry Ryan [Craughwell AC] the first Mayo AC finisher was Robert Malseed in 3rd place in a time of 25.47 while Antony Murray came home 8th in an excellent 28.08 who was closely followed by Antony Devanney 9th in 28.18, Francis Cryan continuing his fine form shown throughout the 4 league races to date finished 11th in 28.54.

The ever consistent Mary Gleeson took the womens title finishing 13th overall in 29.33 her third Swinford title in four years. She was closely followed by Collette Tuohy who has been outstanding in every race that she has run this year. Kathy Connolly came home in 32.09 to finish 3rd.

Indeed the top 6 women finishers were the same people who were top 6 in the Westaro Balla 10k the previous weekend. Mayo AC woman Angela OConnor was winner of womens +35 age category and Anne Murray took the +45 prize.

In the mens +50 age category, Ronnie Naylor was the winner while it was great to see Tom Hunt making a fine return to form finishing 2nd in the same age group.

Many other Mayo A C members including those who came into the club through the Fit4Life programme performed well and it was great to see two members Joe Cambell and Dominick Regan back in action having been out of the sport through injury in recent years.
