Swinford 8k – results are provisional

Swinford AC hosted their annual 8k on Sunday. It was also the fourth
race in Mayo AC’s C&C Cellular Road League.
The turnout was slightly down on last year but conditions were good
and the race put some Síamsa on the local Sráide.
Mary Gleeson ran really well and won the women’s race for the fourth
year in row in 29:35,  slighty slower than 2011. However, she
increasingly lacks any real local competiton.This may be in part due
to six races taking place in Mayo over the week-end.
Mayo AC dominated the women’s results again, and there was a
remarkable performance on her home streets by Margaret Glavey who
won the o60 category in 36:47.
The men’s race was marred by poor stewarding just before the 5k mark, when race leaders Matt Bidwell (GCH) and David Tiernan,  who were well ahead at the time, went off course. Race organisers Swinford AC placed them first and second when results were published. Matt Bidwell won this race last year in 25:41 and is keen to win the Road League again, although he  may miss a couple of races. He was 54 seconds ahead of the field just before the 4k mark and would have been on target for at least a 26 min finish. Brendan Hession has been in great form recently and his 4th place 29:26 finish was 90 seconds better than last year.

The fifth race in the Road League is the De Care Claremorris 5.
