After yesterday’s races at Galway and Sligo Ox Mountains it was another busy day with members competing at home and abroad. Well done to all who ran so well today at Košice, Lyon, Tarmonbarry, and Longwood.
In Košice Half Marathon (Slovakia) John Higgins ran 74:27, another excellent time from our improving senior and just 40 seconds outside his Longford Half PB at end of August. He finished 7th overall in the field of over 3,800 finishers.
Known as the Peace Marathon, the course, one of the fastest, was created in Košice for the 1997 IAAF World Half Marathon. Košice was chosen as European Capital of Culture 2013 and the Best European City of Sport 2016.
The Košice Peace Marathon dates all the way back to 1924 which is only surpassed by the Boston Marathon in terms of antiquity. Marathon legend Ethiopia’s Abebe Bikila and won this race in 1961. He won the marathon Olympic gold in Rome in 1960 running barefoot, and defended his title in Tokyo in 1964
Results Košice men half marathon:
We had four finishers in the Lyon Marathon. Shane Kelly 3:17.45, Kevin Donnellan 3:36.22, thirteen minutes faster than his 3:49 in Frankfurt in October 2018, Monica Nee 3:55.05, Rob Coyne 4:02.03, Dave McDermott 4:28.51.
In the 36th annual Tarmonbarry, there were three races with most members concentrating on the 3/4 marathon.

Four women ran in the Irish three quarter marathon (19.66mile/ 31.65k) at Longwood Co Meath: Catrina Houlihan 3:41.00, Marcella McDonnell 3:08.40, Noelle Kilduff 3:11.36, Elaine Treacy 3:44.11
Still to come on a very full day of results – the big race locally today was the Mayo Cross Country Championships at Mellet’s Hill Swinford. Seven members competed and all won medals. Results are now posted separately.
