Sunday results – from 5k to Marathon

Athens Marathon finish line in Olympic Stadium.  It was named ‘Spyros Louis’ after the first modern Olympic marathon race winner in 1896

We had a ‘couple’ of runners among a reported 18,500 from dozens of countries who took part in the 35th Athens Marathon this morning. The race started near the tumulus erected for the Greek dead from the Battle of Marathon.

According to legend, the 42-kilometre historic route from Marathon to Athens was first run by Pheidippides, an Athenian messenger who in 490 BC dashed to the city to announce victory over the Persians, before dying of exhaustion.

The battles today were more sporting. Congratulations to Monica and Finian Joyce who both finished in 4:50.50. Our Castlebar based members ran in fairly warm temperatures on a tough course.

The top finishers were from Kenya, with Kalalei the winner in 2:12.17, and first woman was 18 year old Berbane from Ethiopia in 2:34.18.

The Clogher 5k also took place this morning.

Robert Malseed 18:18 and Michelle Needham 20.28 (both Westport AC) were the winners. Well done Tom Jennings 4th in 20:38, and John Cunniffe 10th in 21:53 who were Mayo AC finishers.

Well done also Brendan Murphy who was among the event organisers. Proceeds were in aid of Clogher National School and Community Centre. See
