Sunday races at Ballycotton, Carrick, Kinvara

The Ballycotton ’10’ is one of the premium events on the road running calendar. It attracts high quality fields and is sold out within hours when registration opens in December. The 35th annual race took place with over 2500 on the start line. Clonliffe Harrier Sergio Ciobanu retained his title, winning in 49.20. First woman was Maria McCambridge in 54.48 a new course record. There were a couple of members in field. 

TJ McHugh is in spring marathon training and he headed south again to test out the form.He ran in a group with Maria McC until the 7 mile mark and finished in 23rd place in 55.09, 28 seconds faster than 2011 – a brilliant performance. The Claremorris man says he is ‘very happy’. He looks well set for a good marathon time. There was a fine run too from Derval Devaney in 66.28, 23rd woman finisher.

The 4th Annual Carrick-on-Shannon 10k took place in bright, sunny but chilly conditions. Over 300 participants gathered at the start of this tough two lap course, with three testing hills in the middle of each lap. The winner was M Dalkins (Bourne Sports) in 32.57.
Mary Scully (Mullingar Harriers) was first woman home in 37.06. Ballina native, Norah Newcombe (Seoulflyers.com) was second 38.26. Ann Lennon is on a ‘race a month’ schedule ahead of the National 10k next month and she ran very strongly finishing in third place in 40.18. On this display she will be a top contender in the W45 category and part of a strong Senior/W40+ team. Tom Hunt finished in 41.02 and 1st over 60.

In Kinvara Half Marathon, Brendan Gill finished in 4th place in 78.21, a great run for the Westport man. M Shannon won in 70.14.
Sean Murphy is in top shape and he ran 87.55 – a fine time too. Patricia Carty finished in 113.53. In the 10k race Timmie Glavey was 4th in 35.19 and looks to be in good form this season. Margaret Glavey came home in 48.59.

The 39th Annual Tubbercurry 10k on St Patrick’s Day, is another opportunity for members to put down a marker for the Phoenix Park.
