The Lough Lannagh loop was the setting for the fourth race in 2018 Mayo AC Vodafone C&C Cellular Summer 5k Series which took place at Castlebar this evening. Conditions were calm and overcast on an ideal evening for racing. It’s a challenging course – run clockwise again this year – with a hilly bit in the middle and a tricky sandy downhill section.
The 140 finishers were led home by young local athlete Thomas Devaney (Castlebar AC) in 16:26. He led from start tand was twelve seconds ahead of Brendan Conway (Westport AC) in 16:38. Brendan was also second last week in Ballinrobe last and a winner at Ballyhaunis. Mike Griffin ran strongly for third in 18:08. Brendan Hession was the first Mayo AC finisher – fourth in 18:23.
There has been four different winners so far in the Series.
Colette Tuohy (Mayo AC) had another trademark strong run to win the women’s race in an excellent 19:24 and twelfth overall. It was her second Series victory having won the opening race at Foxford.
Serena Tuffy (Ballina AC) came home second, continuing excellent form in the Series with a great time 20:02 – a massive improvement on her third place 21:56 finish here last year. She was also second in Foxford in 19:52. Gloria Clavijo finished third in 21:42.
Well done to all finishers. There were some exciting battles to the finish line and despite the tough course a few personal bests.
Well done to Colette Tuohy who led the local planning crew and to all the volunteers who helped put on a well organised event.
