St Mary’s Hospital ..’evolution through the decades’

The earlier post reminding members of the resumption of club training this evening at St Mary’s track Castlebar ATU has sparked a lot of interest.

In particular, interest has been generated by the 1896 photo of a St Mary’s Hospital sports day attached to that post.

We are indebted to St Mary’s Heritage Society website for their wonderful history of St. Mary’s. Read more:

They “explore the evolution of the facilities through the decades and give educational information and a real look at what life was like in the hospital.”

“The sports field and track at the rear of the Hospital consisted of 3 acres and was regarded as one of the finest in Ireland in its day. The earliest pictures date back to a sports day in 1895 and 1930″…. read about ‘Mayo GAA and the Grounds’ etc
