Mayo AC sizzling perfomances at the National Masters yesterday earned 14 individual medals – 5 gold, 7 silver and two bronze. Hot stuff indeed in the Tullamore 30° heat.

The icing on the club’s celebratory cake came at the end of a long day when the relay races took place.

Our sprinters squad has been training hard over recent weeks. Fair play to senior sprinter Declan Owens who was in Tullamore to support. He has been busy organising track sessions and coaching with the help of the club.
In addition the relay team’s experience of a 4th place result at the recent Senior Championships was a motivating factor.

Earlier in the day John Walkin missed out on bronze in 200m individual by 0.09 of a second. He gave absolutely everything on day –  “just got caught in last 20m or so, bit disappointed but gave a performance and especially coming back from hamstring tear 8 weeks ago”

The team missed out on medals in the 4x100m (John says “needs more work on the exchanges”) but they more than made up for it in the 4x400m with a super silver.
He says it was “absolutely unreal everyone put in a massive shift. Really delighted with silver”.
The team make special mention of our supporting crew of medal winning women who “roared and cheered us on in the 4 x 4. They were super.”
As one of them, triple medal winner Mags Glavey put it “the men’s 4 x 400m was Mayo AC’s race of the day! We cheered them on with great gusto and what a team effort! Each of the 4 lads gave it their all. It was a thrill to watch and enjoy. Well done again lads.” And so say all of us.
Club Chairperson John Byrne added “Congratulations to everyone who represented Mayo AC at the Masters Athletics Outdoor Championships in Tullamore. There was an impressive medal haul but everyone who wore the vest and competed in very tough conditions deserves enormous credit.
Particularly delighted for our mens 4 x 400m team. I know that silver medal will be cherished.”
