The IAAF World Half Marathon Championships took place in Valencia, Spain today March 24, 2018…“an event which offers a unique blend of the world’s best elite athletes and 15,000 recreational runners,” said IAAF President Sebastian Coe.
There were over 120 starters in the Women’s race over a reputedly fast course with a helpful tail wind in the closing stages. Among them was Melbourne based Mayo AC member and Erris native Sinéad Diver representing Australia. Sinéad runs with South Melbourne AC in Victoria.
She competed for Australia in the last two World Marathon Championships in Beijing 2015 and London 2017.
Sinéad’s personal best time for the half marathon is 73:19 achieved in the Gold Coast Australian Championships in July 2016.
Today in Valencia she ran a fantastic personal best 71:40, knocking an amazing 99 seconds off her 2016 time and finishing 23rd overall and fourth European behind Britain’s first finisher Charlotte Purdue 71:21. Sinéad’s teammate Ellie Pashley also ran a PB 71:43.
Sinéad was well ahead of Lizzie Lee, leading Irish team finisher in 46th place 73:19 who also ran an excellent PB, improving on her Barcelona time last month. Both Sinéad and Lizzie are former winners of the West of Ireland 10k in Castlebar.
It’s a remarkable achievement for Sinéad – 41 last month – and places her further up the list of best Irish women all-time over this distance. Congratulations!
The Irish team finished 14th of 19 countries competing in 3:14.44. :
