Sinéad Diver brilliant new PB in World Athletics 10,000 metres final

Sinéad Diver competing in the World Athletics Championships in Doha – seen here just ahead of winner Sifan Hassan

Yet another chapter in the amazing athletics story of Sinéad Diver was written tonight at the 2019 World Athletics Championships in Doha.

Twenty two of the world’s best women distance athletes were on the startline. Twenty five laps of the track ahead of them. Our Belmullet native was joined by Ellie Pashley competing in the Australian colours.

Sinéad looked relaxed and smooth as she went through the first kilometre in 3:16 in 13th place with just a few seconds covering first to last.

She ran alongside Ellie for most of the race and they hit halfway in 15:42.

As the leaders battled it out over the remaining laps Sinéad went through 6k:18:50, 7k: 21:59, 8k:25:09, 9k: 28:18, finishing in a brilliant new PB 31:25 – twenty five seconds under her previous best 31:50 set last December in Melbourne.

She came home in 14th place with Ellie Pashley in 13th, also in a new PB 31:18.

It’s a great achievement for Sinéad and a tremendous boost for her confidence as she builds towards the marathon in Tokyo in just over ten month’s time.

Sifan Hassan (NED) won the race in 30:17 with a blistering final lap of 61.5.
