Shane Bracken is first Mayo athlete to run sub 4 mile

Shane Bracken (Swinford AC and on athletics scholarship at St Leo’s Florida) ran into history at the weekend.

He became the first Mayo athlete to run a sub 4 mile.

Competing in the Vanderbilt Invitational Indoor meet at Nashville TN he finished second in the fastest of three heats of the mile in 3:58.36.
That’s a wonderful achievement for Shane who has made major progress over the past year. He ran a 3:41 1500m in spring 2021 and has had an excellent cross country season.
Mayo runner Neville Davey came close to sub 4 indoor in 1998 with a 4:00.37 finish.
In Connacht Regional Athletics terms,  Bracken lies 3rd for Indoor sub 4 mile behind Longford’s Ray Flynn 3:51.20 in 1983, and Galway’s Paul Donovan 3:56.39 in 1986. In Irish all-time Indoor mile lists he ranks 18th.
