Over 7,000 competitors from all over the world are registered to take part in more than sixty different sporting events at forty venues.
Among them  our Mayo AC M60 masters champion Seamus Gaughan. Seamus is a Geesala native and Dublin based. He competed in the 5,000 metres on  Friday ( 2nd August) at the Mary Peters Athletics Track in south Belfast. He finished third behind winner and great rival Pat O’Shea (Iveragh AC) with Alain Aguero (France)  2nd . (Aguero has a world ranking time of 2:20.77 for the 800 metres in 2012).   Seamus won a silver in the 5,000 metres as M55 when the games were held in Vancouver in 2009.  In the 1500 metres Aguero won, O’Shea 2nd and Seamus 3rd. Well done Seamus. After a rest on Sunday he another duel with Frenchman Aguero today (Monday)  in the 10,000 metres; it must have been some battle – both with fast times and only separated by 16 seconds. 38:34 for Aguero and Seamus 38:50. Three of the toughest track distances in four days – just shows what our inspirational runners can do. A well deserved 3 medal tally for Seamus . What a wonderful few days. And he kept going. On the final day Seamus ran and won the 10k cross country M60 race finally claiming gold to add to his tally. Well deserved, congratulations from all at Mayo AC.
