The sun shone on the inaugural Belcarra 8k which took place on Sunday. Over 270 runners, walkers, joggers, pushchairs, dogs lined up at the start. The race was excellently organised by Conor Heaney and his Community team as a fundraiser for ongoing work to provide sports facilities in Belcarra.
The one lap course was fast and flat with just one short hill after 2k.
Mayo AC dominated the top men and women finishers. Robert Malseed returned to racing with a clear win in 27.17, followed home by Anto Devaney in 28.29. Noel Gibbons was 4th in 29.38; other Mayo AC finishers included Michael McNeela 30.43, Tom Hunt 31.41, PJHall 34.54. Anto Devanney was third in the Army Half Marathon Championships held at Leenane on Wed last. He finished in 83 mins on this tough course.
The first woman over the line was Kathleen Barry in 34.43. Joan Walsh (Mayo AC) was just 9 seconds behind in 34.52, with clubmate Ann Fahey in 3rd in 35.43, 4th Donna Gallagher 35.55, 5th Anne Heaney 35.59.
