At the Senior Track & Field Championships in Santry Declan Owens competed in the 100 metres but was unable to repeat his 12.3 pb form last week in the Connacht senior finals. He recorded 12.5 in his heat but did not progress further. Jason Smyth (Derry City Track Club) won the final in 10.71.
Aisling Joyce (Claremorris AC) finished 10th in the women’s 1,500 metres in 4:40.34 – great experience and a creditable performance. Winner was Ciara Mageean (UCD AC) in 4:24.
Congratulations to Michaela Walsh (Swinford AC) who made her presence felt in the senior ranks winning shot putt silver and bronze in the hammer. She won gold last weekend in the England Athletics u20 championships in Bedford where she threw the shot 15.15 – a new PB, a new National Junior record and a World Junior A standard for the World Junior Championships in Poland next month. She also came 3rd in the women’s u20 4kg hammer.
At the Energia 24 hour championships in Victoria Park, Belfast well done to Áine Gallagher who completed 78 laps, 128.9 kilometres – just over 80 miles to finish 12th woman behind winner Louise Smartt 204k/126 miles.
