New Year New Opportunities

Mayo AC Cross Country get together at Mellett’s Hill this morning.

The new year is a popular time to make a fresh start and there are always opportunities to try new athletics disciplines. Competition is also an added incentive for members to compete and come together as part of our club teams.

Indoor and Outdoor track and field, and Cross country events are ideal opportunities. There’s a great range of distances on indoor and outdoor tracks, varying crosd country terrains and a selection of throws, jumps etc in the field events.

A reminder that entry deadlines for upcoming championships are fast approaching. There are three meets on the immediate horizon: National Masters Indoors January 30, Mayo Indoors February 13, (both at Athlone TUS), and National Masters cross- country February 13 at Castlelyons Co Cork.

Thanks to Colette Tuohy who organised another enjoyable weekend outing supported by Mike Griffin – seen here leading this morning’s strides as he did last week at Turlough

And a further reminder that Mayo AC registration for 2022 is due for renewal. You’ll need to a registered member to take part in any county, regional or National championships as an individual or part of club or county team. And let our club secretary Maria know if you intend entering. Apart from the National marathon, the club pays championship entry fees.

New kid off the blocks

We’ve posted Declan Owens 60 metres sprint results at last Sunday’s National Indoor League staged at the Sport Ireland Indoor Arena in Abbotstown.

The fastest 60m time of the day – 6.67 seconds – was recorded by 19 year old Israel Olatunde UCD AC. That was a new Irish under-23 record.

Paul Hession is the only Irish athlete to have run faster. He set the Irish senior record of 6.61 back in 2007.

Now based in Perth Australia, Hession was one of the guest award presenters at the recent 2021 Connacht Athletics Awards.

Olatunde’s 6.67 puts him well within reach of the qualifying time of 6.63 for the World Indoor Championships in Belgrade next March.

Attached is the Mayo Co Board list of fixtures until March:
