Provisional results of the National Marathon Championships have been published by Athletics Ireland. It was a very competitive event with 3,695 individual category club runners listed – a record – 2,370 men and 1,325 women. Congratulations to our Senior women’s team who won bronze. Norah Newcombe, Sarah Syron and Anne Marie Staunton’s combined time of 9:43.28 placed them third from a total of 123 clubs competing – well done to winners GCH 9:15.03.
It was a brilliant performance by our senior women and their medals are well deserved. Well done to Norah who added to her bronze, winning gold in the F35 category and sixth Irish finisher overall in 2:53.41.
We had a fourteen women in our F35 team and the combined time of the best three Marcella McDonnell, Ursula O’Grady and Tracy Cunnane placed them 90th of 233 clubs. Our W50 women just missed out on bronze finishing 4th of 12 teams. Monica Joyce and Mary Murphy also missed out on individual medals – both finished 4th in F55, F60 respectively.
The combined time of senior men’s team 8:59.36 – Sean Murphy, Matthew Gill and Noel Gibbons – made them 36th of 433 teams. In M50 our team of Gerry Galvin, Owen Mongan and Jimmy Feeney finished 10th of 34 with a combined time of 10:39.23.
As always it’s all in the detail, and some of our finishers will be busy analysing their split statistics for evidence of their performances. We wish them all a good recovery and look forward to seeing them back competing soon – Hollymount road races are on November 20.
