Medal success for Mayo athletes at National cross country

The big athletics event today (November 24) was the National Senior and Junior Cross country  championships at Sport Ireland National Campus, Abbotstown.

There was well deserved success for three local athletes.

Maeve Gallagher (Swinford AC) won bronze in the junior women’s race over 4,000 metres. She finishing 25 seconds behind winner Jodie McCann (DSD) and just one second ahead of fourth placed Inishowen AC’s Sarah Kelly.

There were five Mayo runners in the field of 147.  None of the Mayo clubs were able to make a team in the Inter Clubs competition. Mayo finished 5th of 9 counties competing.

In the junior men’s race (6,000 metres) Keelan Kilrehill (Moy Valley AC) won silver finishing seven seconds behind Darragh McElhinney (UCD AC). Mayo finshed eighth of nine counties. There were 127 finishers.

The third Mayo medal winner was Sorcha McAlister (Westport AC) who won gold in the women’s under 23 race over 8,000 metres.

It’s good to see these three rising stars gain success on the national stage, and give much needed hope for the future of senior athletics in the county.
