The busy weekend began with news of two Mayo group in Madrid for the Half Marathon on Saturday morning April 27. It was a sunny Spanish day with quite different ‘feels like’ temperatures to our post-Hannah western counties, as runners and spectators tried tried to get into the shade from the buildings.
The race starts on a gradient for about 3k, and then there’s a series of hills. There was a huge crowd as you’d expect in a big city with a marathon and a half marathon taking place in tandem up until about 11 miles.
Then the marathon veers off to the right, while the half goes left. The finish comes up by Atocha train station with a long straight run to the line.
As Ann McDonnell says “we all surprised ourselves and came in ahead of expectations”.
Three Ballyhaunis based members also ran: Paul Damron 1:56.28, Natasha Kelly 1:56:28 and Trevor Kelly 2:45.45. As Natasha says “we took it easy and enjoyed the atmosphere” .
Well done all, and thanks to Ann and Natasha – our Reuters correspondents in Madrid.
Ann McDonnell 1:51.43
Karen Devaney 1:54.54
John Nyland 1:56

Kenya’s Reuben Kerio and Ethiopia’s Shasho Insermu set race records in this the 42nd Rock ’n’ Roll Madrid Marathon, crossing the line of the IAAF Gold Label road race in 2:08:18 and 2:26:24 respectively.
