Mayo County 10k results

The latest race in our Club League was the Mayo County 10k Championships hosted by Swinford AC at Killasser on Wednesday evening. It was gloomy, humid  and wet on a day when rainfall was measured at 32.2mm at Knock Airport. The continuous rain made for a tough test and road surfaces on some  ‘long acre’ single track stretches hard to negotiate. 

Mayo (18) and Swinford (14) provided most  of the 36 finishers – one less than 2015.  Four of the thirteen clubs in the county were represented. According to AAI July figures there are currently 704 registered adult club athletes in the county- senior (96), junior (12), and masters (596). The scheduling of this championship race as a standalone event on a mid week evening is probably the main factor in the small number competing.

Well done to all our competitors – thirteen members won medals in individual or team categories. Medals were awarded according to entry details.

The first three home were William Hynes, Sean Murphy and Brendan Hession. The first three women were Colette Tuohy, Patricia McKeon, Ann Murray. Breege Staunton has completed a few 5ks recently and was delighted to finish her first 10k in a few years. Some GPS watches agreed the Killasser course as 9.92k.

Thanks to hosts Swinford AC who provided welcome refreshments  prior to prizegiving in the Community Centre.

The Club League will be updated to include points won by our 18 finishers. League leaders Brendan Murphy and Angela McVann added to their points and will be hard to catch over the remaining four target events. The next race is the De Care Dental Claremorris 8k on August 28.
