Mayo AC winners at Portumna Forest Marathon

Today’s Portumna Forest marathon event consisted of four races – 50k, marathon, half-marathon and 10k.

The organisers say “it’s a spiritual experience – while it tests the body physically, it soothes the mind in equal proportions….. there is a serenity about the place that bows down to the beauty of the natural environment.”

We’re not sure if our four representatives who competed there were tested and soothed in equal proportions!

However, they can all celebrate equal measures of success and satisfaction.

The marathon involved eight laps of the forest trails. Darren Flanagan who has been enjoying ‘speed work’ in our 5k Series, ran brilliantly to win the race in an impressive 2:55.07, averaging 4:10 per k.

John Gordon M50 followed him home in second place in 3:04.44 – another great performance.

Colette Tuohy W55 was the first woman finisher in the half-marathon in 1:32.50 averaging 4:24ks over the four laps. How she fits it all in while leading a training group, organising events etc amid her busy life is truly inspirational.

On Tuesday evening in Ballinrobe she set off behind the whole field and still came home in 21:30!

Half marathon winner was Shane Begley 1:22.06

Well done too to Martin Fitzmaurice who was our other half-marathon finisher in 2:09.00 – a great run by the Ballyhaunis M60 member.

Congratulations to our Portumna winners!
