Lough Lannagh was the familiar for the second race in 2019 Mayo AC Summer 5k Series which took place at Castlebar last evening (May 28) Conditions were calm and overcast on an ideal evening for racing. It’s a challenging course – run clockwise again this year – with a hilly bit in the middle and a tricky downhill section.
The 135 finishers were led home by Jake O’Regan (St John’s AC) who gave a brilliant display of fast front running to finish in 15:41 – easily a course record for this clockwise version of the Lough Lannagh circuit. The Clare native was well ahead of Brendan Conway (Westport AC) who came home in 16:35 – he was also second in this race last year. Clubmate David Hickey was third in 17:03. Well done to Pat Morrison who was the first Mayo AC finisher – fourth in 17:31.
Edel Reilly has been in excellent form this year and she was the clear winner of the women’s race in 19:00.
Maura Ginty (Sportsworld AC) was second last week in Claremorris (19:46) and again this week in 20:13. Dalva McPhilips came home third in 20:30 – she was part of another good contingent from Westport AC this week and they were well represented on the podium. Well done to all of our runners – Mayo AC had a strong turnout again and their first woman finisher was Paula Donnellan Walsh in 21:15.
Congratulations to the winners and well done to all finishers. There were some exciting duels over the final metres to the finish line and despite the tough course a few personal bests.
Like last week in Claremorris there was a great buzz of excitement at the finish area – excluding the midges.
Thanks and well done to race organiser Colette Tuohy who led the Castlebar crew and to all the volunteers who helped.
