On Wednesday morning (June 28) Mayo Athletic Club were delighted to present a cheque for €2,290 to Mayo Community Living.
The cheque was the proceeds of funds raised through Michael’s Greenway Remembrance Run 5k at Castlebar, which was organised by Mayo AC last New Year’s Eve in memory of their clubmate and friend Michael McNeela, who passed away suddenly in October 2022, RIP.
Michael worked at one the Mayo Community Living locations.
The cheque was presented at Turlough by club Chairperson John Byrne to Martina Reynolds and Helen Curran from Mayo Community Living.
Speaking at the cheque presentation, John Byrne Club Chairperson, said “Mayo Athletic Club are honoured to contribute this money to a very important local organisation that is Mayo Community Living. It is a fitting tribute to our friend and clubmate, Michael McNeela, who was a much loved and respected member of our athletics family and is greatly missed.
On behalf of Mayo Community Living, Martina Reynolds thanked Mayo AC for the cheque.
She said “it will be used to support the residential service for adults with intellectual disabilities throughout Mayo.
The service supports a person centred approach, focused on meeting the individual needs of its people.
Care is delivered using a social model while also supporting health care needs as required. There are presently community services in Ballina, Ballinrobe, Castlebar, Charlestown, Claremorris, Swinford and Westport”.
Mayo AC are grateful to the sponsors of the Michael McNeela Greenway 5k event – Michael and Attracta Barrett from Turlough Stores and the Tara Cafe, Castlebar. And to Scoil Raifteiri Castlebar for use of their facilities.
There was also excellent support from race participants, and the local community which contributed greatly to the success of the fundraising event – which was led by Colette Tuohy.
