Portumna Forest marathon: John Gordon 2nd, Darren Flanagan 1st
Two club members completed the Portumna Forest marathon today.
Darren Flanagan finished first in 2:52.30 a PB, with John Gordon second in 2:54.41 Well done to both!
John and Darren have completed a number of marathons in last few years and both ran the 50k distance in Portumna last year.
John ran 2;50.53 in Dublin last October, where Darren came home in 2:59.28.
Other notable finishes by the duo Longford 2022 – John (M45) 2:54.14, Darren 3:03.00; and Attymass 2023 where John Gordon won in 2:54.30 – a great level of consistency in results.

Darren Flanagan on his way to winning the Portumna Forest marathon
Darren (M35) has achieved significant improvement in various events recently – and like many others who ran in last month’s Intersport Elverys Mayo AC 5k series : he finished 18:03, 17:26, 17:10, 16:50 in the chronological race sequence.
As a consequence his 2:52 today (a brilliant improvement of seven minutes since Dublin) proving the value of the adage “if you want to run faster, run in faster races”.
All Portumna Forest Marathon Events are run over a flat 5k loop, with extra distance added for the half marathon and full marathon. The course is run on tarmacadam roads and forest paths that are solid compacted even gravel.
Other distances in the Portumna event were 50k, half-marathon, and 10k
