Céide winner Paul Moran seen here in European Masters Half Marathon M55 gold
The Céide Coast Half Marathon and 10k Coastal Challenge took place this morning. The courses take in the Céide Fields visitor centre, Ballycastle Beach, Downpatrick Head and Dún Briste sea stack. There were 76 finishers in the half marathon
The winner was Paul Moran (Rathfarnham WSAF AC) in 80:22, a great effort on this course. Paul has Mayo roots and has been a regular and successful competitor at races in the West over many years.
He was crowned 2019 European M55 half marathon champion at the European Masters Athletics Championships in Venice last month, running a gutsy 77:20 despite carrying a knee injury and in temperatures of 30C.
The first woman home was Sarah Flanagan in 1:31.50.
Mayo AC finishers were led home by new member John Brennan 1:23.32 who finished second. He won this race last year in 1:24.29. Darren Brewer was our next runner in 1:29.22 a consistently strong performance – 5th overall and second M40. Three Mayo AC M50 runners were next across the line – Noel Gibbons 1:29.46 3rd M50 in 7th overall, Tom Jennings 1:39.03, and Eugene McCartan 1:40.42. Bernice McCartan finished in 2:02.32.
There were 133 finishers in the half marathon.
In the 10k Coastal Challenge Donna Gallagher was our only runner – she finished in 47:25 – 6th overall and 2nd W40.
There were 135 finishers.
Well done to all of our Céide runners.
It was lovely to get this message from Ballycastle AC race organiser Michael Kelly:
“I would like to thank all the Mayo AC runners who came to support our event, it was wonderful to see top athletes compete – thanks again for all your support”.
Thanks Michael – and well done on a great event!
