The inaugural Mayo AC Baxter Streets of Castlebar 5k took place this evening and was a tremendous success. Let’s face it -the weather was awful. Rainfall radar displayed a big splash of blue – heavy rain, not blue sky – moving slowly across the West for most of the evening, and persistent became a longer word as the field headed from the start towards Garryduff. Runners took many twists and turns through the Streets over the first 3k, and after circling the Mall raced along the riverside Greenway and around the open spaces of Lough Lannagh to the finish. A tough day for organisers, stewards or spectators. However, 240 spirited and hardy souls brightened the scene with Baxter tees prominent.
Connacht clubs were well represented, with a big contingent from GCH among them and they were rewarded with first places in five individual categories as well as both team prizes.

John Byrne ran a strong race and a great time (15:57) in the conditions to win easily from Jason Broderick of Craughwell AC, with Westport AC’s Robert Malseed a further half minute behind in third. In the women’s race Aubree Piepmeier (17:54) was always out in front and and led GCH to victory in the team section. Sinead Whitelaw came home second in 18:20, with Colette Tuohy third in 18:46. The event was very successful in this inaugural partnership between Mayo AC and Baxter, which also acted as a fundraiser for the club. Well done to the organising team, stewards, supporters, Order of Malta Gardai, and especially to the catering crew for a brilliant spread in the tennis Club. Mayo AC Secretary Trisha Carty and Frank Collins Financial Controller Baxter were on hand to present the prizes. A special presentation was made to John Byrne in recognition of his 100th race win earlier in the year – now heading for 200!
