Mayo AC women competed in today’s Open Autumn Cross Country event at the National Sports Centre in Abbotstown, Co Dublin.
The Open Autumn races serve as a trial for selection of the Irish masters team ahead of next month’s annual British and Irish Masters Cross Country Championships to be hosted by Scotland at Tollcross Park, Glasgow.
Racing conditions at Abbotstown were good – a clear chilly calm day with a light and 11°.
The circuit is a tough but fair test and like most cross-country courses gives spectators excellent opportunities to see and support competitors.
All women – senior, junior, and masters – plus o65 men ran in the first adult race this afternoon.
Pauline Moran ran 3 laps (approximately 4.5k) in the race for W65+W70 categories..
It was another great performance by Pauline who was the W65 winner by over almost a minute in 19:43 – she ran 19:38 to win last year.
In second place was Mary Browne Lucan Harriers AC in 20:29.
In the masters women 6,000 our runners were Norah Newcombe Pieterse W40, Angela O’Connor W55, and Paula Donnellan W40.
Norah finished an excellent 7th overall and third W40 in 22:58.
Angela was 28th overall and 4th W55 finisher in 26:10.
Paula Donnellan was 38th overall and 10th W40 finisher in 28:14.
Masters women race (6k) winner was Noeleen Scanlon W35 Letterkenny AC 21:35

With first three in category guaranteed selection, Pauline Moran will lead the Irish W65 team once again in Glasgow, along with Mayo native Mary Browne.
Following today’s trials the Irish Masters Athletics Association will select the various Irish men’s and women’s category teams to compete in Glasgow.
Runners who were unable to compete today can play a wild card (submitting evidence of recent form). One wild card is allowed per age category.
Pauline will be joined in Glasgow by Norah Newcombe Pieterse – 3rd W40.
Angela O’Connor 4th W55 will have to wait until selection process is completed (including wild card) as there are four places on the team.
We will confirm when team selection is published.
The senior mixed relay 4x1500m was contested by 10 club teams : winners Clonliffe Harriers AC
Íde Ní Dhomhnaill West Limerick AC won the senior women’s race (6k) in 20:38, from Louise Shanahan Leevale AC 20:53.
Keelan Kilrehill Moy Valley AC won the senior men’s race (8k) 24:27
