Mayo AC at Belleek l-r Angela O’Connor, Martina O’Connor, Sheelagh McDonnell, Colette Tuohy

The third and final leg of the 2019 Connacht Senior/Masters Cross Country Championships took place at Belleek on Sunday. It was excellently hosted by the local Moy Valley AC.

The Belleek course is an ideal location. It has a one kilometre loop with some challenging sections and is very spectator friendly. Recent rain made underfoot conditions a bit sticky but generally held up well for a busy afternoon with a number of juvenile uneven ages races preceding the two adult contests.
Eleven clubs from around the Connacht Region were well represented in these two events with Sligo AC providing the largest entry of 29 competitors in senior, masters, novice races.
Mayo AC had five members representing the club – Colette Tuohy and Angela O’Connor in masters, Martina O’Connor and Sheelagh McDonnell in novice – all ran in the women’s race over four large loops (4k).
In a field of 47, Colette finished 9th overall and third master (o40). Next home was Martina  O’Connor 13th overall and third novice, followed by her mother Angela in 17th and fifth master. Sheelagh McDonnell was our fourth finisher in 20th place and fifth novice.

Friendly rivalry: Bill Carty and Anto Devaney

The men’s race over 8 laps was won by Paddy O’Toole (Westport AC) first master o40 and showing a clean pair of heels to the Seniors. Anto Devaney was our only competitor and stuck grittily to the task to finish 28th of 47.

As the afternoon progressed it became increasingly wet and a bitter wind blew in from the direction of the Moy. Fair play to our fearsome five who mastered the conditions well.
