The Breaffy 10k was the final race of the 15th Annual Mayo AC Road League and provided a most exciting finish as four of the seven winning categories depended on the finishing places. With points from five of six races counting Brendan Gill went into the race with 110 points from 5 events, so he could expect to marginally improve. David Tiernan who had battled with him over the summer completed four races with 91 points. As it turned out Gill gained 2 in fourth (22 points) and Tiernan 21 for fifth place ensuring they both finished on 112, in joint first place. This the first time the league title has been shared. Anto Devaney got another top 3 League place. John Nolan won the M35 section from neighbour David Delaney. John took up running about a year ago and ran all of the 5k Series races and all but one in the league. He ended up as a race pace setter for Ann Lennon, no mean feat in itself, and his overall performance in 2013 earned him the Most Improved title. Ann Lennon deservedly won her third Road League having claimed the title in 2000, 2002. Her enduring strength and stamina, underlined by consistency marks her out as one of the outstanding Mayo women athletes over many years. Colette Tuohy has finished the season strongly and was 2nd again. Joan Walsh was sitting in 3rd before Breaffy but Chris Gallagher overtook her to win with 106 points. Joan was rewarded by winning the W35 section on 96 from Jackie Fleming on 86. In the o50 sections Margaret Glavey (83) just held off Pauline Moran (80) while Dominic Regan had a fine finish for 2nd M50. Dublin based Paula Prendergast was awarded the Most Improved title in the women’s section. She has had a fantastic season with PBs in a range of distances from 5k upwards, and capped by a Senior Team bronze medal in the National Half Marathon.
Once again, Brendan Chambers of C&C Cellular, Road League sponsors for the eighth year, was on hand to present the trophies at the Breaffy 10k HQ. Congratulations to all the winners and thank you and well done to all who participated in the 2013 Road League.
Road League points tables from all six races will be updated and be published here soon.
