Masters win fourteen medals in Athlone
We had seven masters competing today in the National Masters Indoors Track & Field Championships in the arena at Athlone IT. It’s our second big event in the 2015 National calendar, having had a good contingent competing in Tuam last month in the Masters Cross Country. It was an early start crossing the border at 10:30 and a long day with a busy timetable due to record entries. The first events went off at 11a.m and we left the arena on Sunday evening at 7pm after the 1500m races. Along the way there was keen competition, a big crowd enjoying some great finishes, records, friendships renewed and plenty fun. As results show we competed in various events across a range of age categories – higher, faster, longer – peer rivalry is friendly but fierce, and a wonderful experience for those heading for the golden years.
So to the important details which we’ll try and update as results are published, which they now are – some still listed as unofficial. Apologies to Martin Peyton who won a bronze in the M65 shot putt – we were not aware of this until results published. This posting is now updated to include that.
Well done too to our trainer Matt Bidwell GCH) who ran a fine race to win his second successive gold in the M40 3,000m in 8:56:12, twenty seconds faster than his 2014 winning time.
The Mayo AC medal count was 14 – we won 12 there in 2014.
Six of our seven athletes won medals – and here is the summary
Mags Glavey F65: three golds: 800m, 3000m, 1500m
Patrick Moran M60: four bronze – shot putt (PB), high jump, long jump and 400m
Pauline Moran F55: silver in 3000m, also ran 800m and 1500m
