West of Ireland Women’s 10k + results
Cork athlete Lizzie Lee visited family in Westport during the holiday week-end and took time off to easily win the WoI Women’s 10k in Castlebar in 37:20. Lizzie was in the Irish Team led by Fionnuala Britton who won gold at the European Cross Country Championships earlier this year. She was well outside her personal best road 10k time of 35:07 which she ran four weeks ago in New York. Colette Tuohy (Mayo AC) was 40 seconds outside her winning time in this race last year to finish in a brilliant third place. Maura Ginty in fourth 39:45, was just one second ahead of a great run from Ann Lennon. Sarah Syron finished sixth again this year and was rewarded with an excellent sub 40 PB – two minutes faster than 2012 in 39:57.

Castlebar Fit4Life Group (pictured above with Sonia O’Sullivan pre-race) led by Ann McDonnell were well represented.
Ann reports “Loads of PBs in our group so everyone was delighted. Conditions were tough conditions with the wind blasting into your face all the way in the Turlough Rd. I’d say numbers were a bit down on last year though I haven’t heard the final tally – the poor weather that morning may have put off a few walkers. It was very well organised and marshalled, and well supported along the route by the locals, alot more visible than other years. Castlebar should be very proud of the weekend, the town looked great decked out in pink flags, balloons and streamers”. Thanks to Ann for sending on the photo. It seems to have inspired the group – so many PBs!
