Intersport Elverys Mayo AC Series: Castlebar 5k results

Lough Lannagh Castlebar was the setting for the first race in the Intersport Elverys 11th Mayo AC 5k series on Tuesday evening May 9.
It was the first race of the club’s popular fundraising series since 2019.
The course record of the lakeside Park course for all previous Castlebar Series 5ks was run by 2019 winner Jake O’Regan -15:41 .
This year’s race was over a different newly measured easier course with the only significant uphill gradients in the first kilometre, then it was twice anti-clockwise over the bridge, before the finish within the park near Blackfort Manor entrance.
Conditions were overcast with rain easing as the race progressed.
The 126 finishers were led home by John Courell Ballina AC in 16:33 a great time. He completed the Manchester Marathon just a couple weeks ago.
Kilmovee 10k winner Dan Charlton Mayo AC chased him all the way to finish second in an excellent 16:45. Clubmate Michael Rocke was third in 17:11.

West of Ireland women’s 10k winner Norah Newcombe Pieterse Mayo AC was first home in the women’s race in 17:59. She was a clear two and a half minutes ahead of Maura Ginty Sportsworld AC second in 20:34. Maura was second in the last Castlebar series race in 2019.
Sharon McLoughlin Westport AC was a close third in 20:49

Dan, Michael and Norah led a great turnout by Mayo AC runners. Well done to all of them.
It was a great start to the four race series, and runners will be looking forward to improving their 5k times at the next three races..
