Intersport Elverys Mayo AC 5k series Claremorris results
It was a beautiful sunny evening trackside as runners gathered at Claremorris for the second race in the 11th Intersport Elverys Mayo AC Summer Series on Tuesday evening (May 16).
Conditions were ideal for running – calm and dry 13°C.
The one lap course is mainly flat over the first half with a gradual climb from 3k until entering the track and a 400 metre circuit to the finish line.
There was a great turnout – 142 finishers.
Among them another excellent number of Mayo AC runners, and the race was also well supported by athletics clubs, fitness groups, and individuals – all looking to improve their times as the Series progresses.
Finishing times this evening were generally much improved across the whole spectrum of runners compared to last week’s first race which was held in wet conditions at Castlebar.
Congratulations to John Courell Ballina AC) who marked his second win in the series with an excellent clear cut victory in a great time 16:14. There was a brilliant battle for second place with Declan Brennan from Tuam finishing in 16:55 and just heading Michael Rocke (Mayo AC) on the line.
Michael was also third in Castlebar last week and was delighted this evening to be rewarded with a 16:56 PB and his first sub 17. Rowland McIntyre was our second finisher closing fast for fourth in 17:00.
Last week’s second place finisher Maura Ginty (Sportsworld AC) led a trio of Mayo women across the finish line in 19:57 – almost 40 seconds faster than last week. Maura was second in this race in 19:46 the last time it was held in 2019. Rhianna Heneghan (Mayo AC) was delighted to finish a close second in 20:02, improving massively on her 6th place 21:24 in Castlebar .
She joined the club earlier this year and is a welcome addition to our senior ranks.
Paula Donnellan was third in 20:52 marginally faster than 5th place 21:01 last week and just edging out Donna Gallagher 4th in 20:54.
Well done to the winners and to all finishers – again this week quite a few more pbs among them.
