Indoors Outdoors round-up

Declan Owens from Claremorris is a new young member and he competed in the National Senior Indoor Championships which took place over the week-end at Athlone IT. There were seven heats of the 60 metres on Saturday and in the third of these Declan finished in 8.14, unfortunately well outside the mark required for sem-final qualification which was about 7.30. He was disappointed in his race and in particular his poor start from the blocks. You don’t get much chance to recover from this in the few seconds to the finish line. Declan had recorded a 7.9 finish in an Open Meeting in Athlone three weeks earlier. However, he thoroughly enjoyed the championships experience. He does his training at NUIG where he is a student, and works with a few other sprinters there twice a week. He is looking forward to the Connacht Indoors next week-end where he will have another chance to achieve a better performance. It’s great to see young athletes enter the Senior ranks and compete at higher levels. So well done Declan, and best of luck next week-end.
Congratulations to Aishling Forkan (Swinford AC) who won bronze in the Senior Women’s 200 metres in 24:49.

Meanwhile in the breezy outdoors on Saturday, Anto Devaney finished second in the Tourmakeady 8k in 30:51, behind winner Brendan Conway 29:05. Last week he was second in the Turlough 8k in 30:10.  Edel Feeney was second woman in 37:43, ahead of Ann McDonnell 4th in 37:55.  Results: Tourmakeady2015_8km

On Sunday, Matt Bidwell (GCH) was the winner of the Kilconieren 5 in 27:22, well inside Mick Fogarty’s 2014 time 27:59. With just five finishers under 30 minutes  windy weather may have had an effect – Matt recorded 25:46 when winning this race in 2011. All proceeds from the event went to Athenry Cancer Care.
