The 48th Hollymount races took place in typically bleak cold and misty November conditions. The course is open to the weather bordered by low stone walls and the finishing straight up the main street of the village appeared bleaker than usual as the turnout was very low. The traditional coachload of visitors from the Liverpool area was especially welcome as it boosted the numbers. More pics added. Regina Casey (GCH) won the women’s one lap 3k. She sat in behind Colette Tuohy on the way round and her sprint finish took her clear in the final metres to win in a fast 10:37. Colette was well satisfied with her warm up for the International cross country in Cardiff on Saturday next, and her 10:45 finish was over 20 seconds better than last year. Elizabeth Egan (Liverpool Harriers) also improved on her 2012 time to finish 3rd. John Byrne (Mayo AC) led from start to finish and was delighted to win his first Hollymount 10k in 34:12 – a surprise for many, given his record in winning local road races over the years. Alan Ashton (Liverpool Harriers AC) improved on his 2012 finish and hung on for second place in 34:56. Anto Devaney went in typical fashion and worked his way through the field. He held off a determined finish by Alan Kearns (Sligo AC) to finish third in 36:57, one second off his 2012 time.
M50 winner and Hollymount regular Tommy Joe Whyte (Tuam AC) 38:12, is the new kid in the M50 category and he had a couple of minutes to spare from a resurgent Dominic Regan, Jimmy Feeney and Brendan Monaghan (Tuam AC) who jumped on his bike for the return trip home.
Meanwhile in the Remembrance 5k in Dublin, Mayo AC’s Seamus Gaughan M60 finished 27th in 18:46 and looks to be in great form ahead of the International masters cross country where he will be joining clubmates Colette Tuohy and Pauline Moran.
