Mayo AC took to the streets of Dublin on Bank Holiday Monday morning competing in the National Half Marathon. Our brilliant squad of runners – a record for the club – were among 800 club athletes in this event which is incorporated in the Dublin Rock ‘n Roll Half marathon along with thousands of other participants – there were 5007 finishers listed. It was an ideal morning for running with clear blue skies over the city. However, there was not even a light breeze apart from that that generated by thousands of legs and arms, and of course lungs. Conditions became quite hot and energy sapping as the race took a winding course through the Phoenix Park from mile 6 at Chapelizod Gate.
Roger Barrett made his club championship debut and was out with the early leaders in 10th place after 10k in 33:27, with  John Byrne in 21st just over a minute behind in 34:55. At the finish Roger came home 11th and John 18th of the Irish competitors. Balla 10k winner Freddy Sittuk (Raheny Shamrock) won bronze in 67:10.  Brendan Hession, John Nolan and Anto Devaney, and Sean Murphy all  looked focused as they also headed for the hilly sections. Paula Prendergast finished 11th woman in 86:44 and led the seniors  home 11th with Sarah Syron striding out not far behind – home in 93:05. Congratulations to Balla women’s race winner Sarah Newcombe (Ballina AC) who had a great race finishing 3rd 81:36 with a bronze medal behind winner Sarah Mulligan (DSD) 76:02.
There were some fantastic performances by our newcomers and despite tough hilly conditions a few PBs. They all seemed to enjoy the big race atmosphere and it was great to see Mayo AC vests stream right though the field. We hope to catch up with their stories shortly. Pauline Moran had a fine run and threw off any recent doubts about her fitness with a 96:59 finish and it looks like a gold medal for her in the F55 category. She ran with newcomer Clive Lavelle throughout and his reward was an excellent pb. Athletics Ireland will be producing the results soon we hope and although we do not expect the success of 2013, there were personal rewards for all our runners. Times shown are clock time (gun to tape) on which Championship results are usually based and chip times (start chip mat to finish mat) are added – obviously they reflect actual achievement more accurately. Well done to all our runners today!

Great news: (Revised Wed 6th ) results published by Athletics Ireland show that our women have won medals:  Senior Women’s Team, Paula Prendergast, Sarah Syron and Tracy Durkan won bronze  with Paula 5th, Sarah 12th, and Tracy 34th.  The 050 Women’s Team: Pauline Moran, Monica Joyce and Bernie McHugh won gold, with Pauline winning o55 gold individual, and in o50 Monica 5th, Bernie 8th . Mary Murphy won bronze o60 individual, with Marie Burke 4th – Congratulations all!

In the men’s o35 John Byrne is listed 3rd 035 in the Overall list but not in the Individual – this is being clarified with AAI.s. Some of our men were well placed individually but no medals. Well done to Roger Barrett 7th Senior, and to John Nolan for a great 6th place 040. There were 767 finishers in the Half Marathon Championships.
