The Mayo Cross Country Championships were held on Sunday (October 4). They were excellently organised again this year by Mayo Athletics Co Board officials in conjunction with Swinford AC at the club’s Mellet’s Hill training location.
The big difference this year was the impact of Covid-19 with guidelines in place for all attending parents/guardians/coaches/offi
Mellet’s Hill is undulating and technical course with twists and turns all round the course’s three combined fields. Conditions were good underfoot despite the wet, cold, windy weather and the hilly course held up well. It proved to be a serious challenge for all.
A number of juvenile events started at 11am before six Mayo AC athletes lined up to compete in the two Seniors /Masters races.
Officials used video at the finishing chute to avoid taking names etc.
Five members competed in the first of the two races over 4 laps including a total of 17 hills. The field of included u16 girls, u18 girls, senior and masters women and men 70+. Our runners were: senior women Martina O’Connor race winner. Sheelagh McDonnell was 5th after completing the Clogher Half yesterday.
Masters o50: Angela O’Connor dropped out at halfway with a hamstring problem. Ann Lennon and Pauline Moran finished first and second.
Tom Hunt was the only competitor o70, running in the same race over 4 laps.
Congratulations to our medal winners – well done all on a tough day.
