A dismal wet and windy evening did not dampen the atmosphere at the final race in 2018 Mayo AC Vodafone C&C Cellular 5k Series at Claremorris on Tuesday evening (June 19). Finishers completed the race with a 400 metre circuit of the track and provided an exciting and successful conclusion to the our 9th Annual Summer Series.
There were 129 finishers including a good representation of local and provincial club runners and fitness groups. Rain during the afternoon continued and a gusting wind added to the testing conditions on the one lap course which has a challenging climb over the closing two kilometres.
There was a great battle to the line by the first three home. Just eight seconds separated them, with Keelan Kilrehill (Moy Valley AC) winning out in 16:55. Brendan Conway (Westport AC) was second in 17:02 just beating Kevin Maye (Moy Valley AC) by one second – 17:03. Mark Basquille was the first Mayo AC finisher – sixth in 18:29.
Colette Tuohy (Mayo AC) won the women’s race in 19:29 – her third win in this year’s series, all consistently on the nineteen minute mark – a wonderful achievement. Serena Tuffy (Ballina AC) was second in 20:04, another fine run ending in a podium position in Series. Michelle Needham (Westport AC) ran strongly for third place in 20:46.
Well done to all finishers – all resilient winners on the evening.
