Final Harvest Series race and fundraiser is a tremendous success

Foxford 5k start

The final race in Swinford AC’s Harvest Series took place on Wednesday evening (September 8). The 5k event also served as a fundraiser for Castlebar Family Centre in memory of Michael Ruane.

This well organised race and excellent joint venture was a tremendous success.

Getting into their stride in the Foxford 5k

A brilliant turnout of 250 runners and walkers assembled on the Swinford Road and were sent on their way by race starter Aidan Hughes. He had re-measured the one lap course recently using Jones Counter. All the turns on the route were well marshalled to the finish line near the Leisure Centre.

Shaun McLoughlin (Westport AC) was first across the line in 16:35, with Swinford AC’s triathlon star Maeve Gallagher first woman home in 17:33.
She was followed in second and third place by two Mayo AC runners – Edel Reilly and Martina O’Connor.
There was a good cross section of club runners in the field, and the event was excellently supported by the local community.
A wondeful total of €3,534 was raised through entry donations and will be presented to the Castlebar Family Centre in due course.
Well done to Swinford AC for providing motivational  opportunities through live racing following on from their East Mayo AC neighbour’s six-race Series earlier in the summer.
Now the scene is set for more events – the cross country season begins soon. There are races lined up for all ages between now and December, including Mayo, Connacht, and National championships, and the European Cross Country Sunday December 12 at Abbottstown.
