Our Flatline crew went to Athlone again on Saturday. This event has a reputation for fast times – the clue is in race title – good organisation, and is well supported. Last year we had 14 competing, but very hot conditions had a big effect on finishing times for many. This year a crew of 21 went with reasonable expectations of pbs, better outcomes, and a chance for some to measure how training is going ahead of Dublin Marathon. Conditions were good, a bright day and hot at times after Friday’s deluge. Over 900 participants searched out the shelter of trees and hedges from a welcome cool cross breeze – ideal running conditions temperature-wise for many. In the final mile the breeze was on runners backs as they headed for the finish.

It’s great to see from results that six of our finishers recorded PBs. Well done to them and all our finishers.

Race winner Sergiou Ciobanu (Clonliffe Harriers) broke the half marathon course record by over four minutes in 66:19. He’s part of a significant contingent heading to Berlin Marathon in a couple of weeks, some looking for Rio qualification times, others hoping the fast course will bring them pbs.

Thanks to Ann McDonnell who sent on details of the day and the race, and compiled our finishers times from www.precisiontiming.net. Ann was delighted to achieve a sub 1:40 pb, clocking four minutes better than her previous best in Ballina and five up on her National time last month. There were brilliant pbs too for Ambrose, Siobhan, Neil, Donal, and Monica and possibly a couple we’ve missed. Great to see Martin Fitzmaurice lead the Ballyhaunis runners home ahead of their Run West 8k on 27th.

Thanks to Finian Joyce for the pre race pic.
