Darren and Colin conquer the Burren

Darren Brewer and Colin Clancy at the Burren

Darren Brewer and Colin Clancy have been discovering the joys of trail running in recent times. Yesterday morning they took on the Burren Challenge – one of three races (marathon,  half, and 10k) across that spectacular and unique landscape.

The marathon course starts and finishes at Ballyvaughan. It takes in Poulacapple and leads on to the green trail road.

It continues along the route both on and off road before climbing up the scenic Caher Valley trail enjoying the beautiful Burren along the way. As Fanore comes into sight there are panoramic views of the Aran Islands and the South Galway coastline. Then down into Fanore, heading for Ballyvaughan taking in part of the renowned Fanore beach. The last trail over Blackhead descends at Gleninagh overlooking the castle, back onto the main road for the last few miles to the finish line in Ballyvaughan

Darren and Colin Clancy chose the marathon course – why not? What would you be doing on a lovely summer morning?

As Darren says “it’s half-on half-off road across the beauty that is The Burren. It was a very hot day with a few tough mountain climbs but a spectacular course with views of the Aran islands and across Galway Bay.”

finishing times: Darren 3:54.57 24th, Colin 3:54.58 25th.

Winner was Christian Jeuken 3:07.42, first woman Deirdre Lynn Ballina AC 3:41.46 – she was third woman in last week’s River Moy Half.

Well done Darren and Colin – great running!
