Damien Finnegan runs 13 minute PB in Cork City Marathon

(Including results from yesterday at Tullaroan and Maugherow).
This morning the Cork City Marathon took place with ‘thousands of runners’  participating according to reports .
It’s one of the biggest marathon events on the Irish athletics calendar and a very popular June Bank Holiday race.

The full marathon field set off at 8.15am, and the 10k at 8.45am – both from St Patrick Street –  while the half-marathon started at 10.15am from Monahan Road.
The marathon course follows the River Lee out east to Lough Mahon and returns westwards from mile 6/7 via two loops to rejoin the river area around mile 22, turn east again to the finish line near St Patrick Street.
New member Mary Browne entered the marathon while she was with her previous club Lucan Harriers AC – that’s how she’s listed on results.
She won silver W65 at Tullamore in the National Half-marathon last August finishing in 1:37.28 behind Pauline Moran Mayo AC, who set a new W65 National Half-marathon record winning gold in 1:30.56.
She ran 3:48.13 chip in the Dublin Marathon in 2022.
Mary’s training in recent months has been focused on completing the Cork City Marathon.
She was joined in Cork by her Mayo AC clubmate Damien Finnegan M40 – he ran a marathon pb in Dublin 2023 in 3:28.58. He’s been in great form this year and ran 1:28.28 in the Kinvara Half last March.
It was dry and warm in Cork early this morning – and temperatures rose from 15°C to 19/20+ making for tough running conditions for all competitors.
Split times:
Damien Finnegan:
10k 44:18, Half 1:34.08, 30k 2:14.05, 40k 3:03.31:  Finish 3:15.26 – 157th overall –  that’s a massive new marathon personal best by 13 minutes – averaging 4:37 per kilometre, brilliant running, congratulations Damien!
According to him ‘it was sweltering towards the end’ and many runners found the second half tough.
Mary Browne splits:
10k 52:37, Half 1:51.43, 30k 2:47.42, 40k 4:21.04:  Finish:4:43.26 – average 6:42k.
It looks like she was one of many who had a painful second half. Well done Mary to keep going to the finish line!
The Irish W65 marathon record is held by Mary Lynch Raheny Shamrock AC who ran 3:33.34 in the Dublin Marathon in 2019
Cork City Marathon winners:
Pawel Kosek 2:23.24
Aoife Cooke Eagle AC 2:56.33
And in yesterday’s Tullaroan Half Marathon in Kilkenny,  congratulations to Paula Donnellan Walsh who came home first of 20 women finishers in 1:40.33.
Race winner was Peter Tuohy 1:21.37 (total finishers 71)
And yesterday evening the annual Maugherow 10k took place in Co Sligo.
It’s a figure of eight course which goes to Raghley Harbour and ends with a long drag up to the finish at Maugherow village.
Well done to Ray Clarke who came home 29th of 95 finishers in 42:48 .
Race winners were Alan Dunne 34:51, Fiona Henigan North Sligo AC 41:47.
